According to data compiled and regularly updated by the Washington Post, 1,254 people with a mental illness have been shot dead by US police since the beginning of 2015. This represents 22% of all people shot and killed by police across the country over that period.
I have no words. Armed “peace” offers shouldn’t even be responding to this sort of thing as he was just having separation anxiety.

I just can’t fathom a way in which this could unfold that would make me understand how the officer thought it was an appropriate use of force to shoot a 13 year old kid in the back as the kid ran away from them. It defies logic. Well, there’s my mistake. Trying to apply logic to ANYTHING in the U.S. in 2020.
Gotta tell ya, if it didn’t cost so much to emigrate to Canada, I’d probably already have the paperwork submitted.

Having seen one of these up-close-and-personal?
If you or friends have a whacked out mentally ill, drunk, drugged or psychotic child, relative or colleague? Never, ever call the cops. No matter how out of it they seem? Call the ambulance. Hell. Call the fire department. Do not call the cops. Their only objective will be to “take control”, not necessarily deal with the disturbed individual.
The cops don’t know how and aren’t trained to deal. Do not call them.
![]() 09/09/2020 at 16:50 |

And it’s then you realize that there was probably a reason they realized that figure was important but we will never know what happened beforehand.

Another issue is that assuming that a 13 years old kid might have a gun and might be dangerous is also not a normal thing.
In here, the cops would not even have thought about taking their guns out on such a case.

Yeah, that’s part of the problem. They come “over armed” for the situation— if they get rattled at all? Shots get fired.
It’s all bad.
![]() 09/09/2020 at 17:09 |

The problem is usually when you call 911 they are often just going to send you some of each, and usually the police will be there first since they are out and about instead of deploying from a station.

Alternatively, if you want to have the police respond to situations like this, you need to hire and train for that instead of just giving a day long seminar vs. the massive amount of firearms training (much of which teaches that you’ll die if you don’t shoot possible threats immediately).

Yeah, I know. I revealed my status as an ignorant American there. :( It’s just so frustrating. I want to believe 2020 can’t get any worse, but it keeps slapping us down again. Don’t get me wrong - I’m incredibly fortunate. I already worked from home full time, so there was no danger of an employment interruption for me with COVID. But the oppressiveness of this year..it just feels never-ending. Between the debacle of how the pandemic has been handled and the near-constant stream of news like this, I’m kind of losing any confidence I had left in the human race. It’s like most of the world has forgotten how to give a crap about anyone but themselves.

“Defund the Police” is easily viewed as anti-police. If the true desire is to work with the police to take much of the present load off of them that shouldn’t be their responsibility, and let them focus on “keeping the peace”, then another term would be best, otherwise you set up an us vs. them struggle instead of finding ways to work together to solve systemic problems.
I agree that there needs to be wholesale change, which necessitates societal change, which is hard, but necessary. Hopefully there are enough people in power
who care more about the future of our cities, states & countries than about their political futures to make some real change, and if not, that the right people will step up, regardless of the personal cost.

THIS
Couple years ago a parent of a kid with a mental disability called the Chicago Police. He calmly explained that his son was breaking things with a bat, is not a danger to anyone, has a mental disability, and he just needed some help calming his son down.
When the cops arrived the kid managed to get out of the door of the apartment. Cops saw him running down a flight of stairs holding the bat. They shot him and a neighbor dead. The cops dodged charges because they argued they felt their lives were in danger...nevermind they shot him and the neighbor at a distance and he wasn’t even threatening them, just holding the bat.
Later that same year CPD killed an unarmed autistic teen and were caught on video doing it. At the latest update the cops were merely recommended to have a 90 day suspension.

Badly, badly, badly needs better branding. Beca u se unloading the poli c e s hould be the goal: taking away the money they are given to do those jobs you’re taking off their shoulders is just a consequence.
Half of the cops’ problem (and therefore everyone else’s problem) is they’re expected to deal with a bunch of shit they aren’t trained for and *can’t be* trained for . My sister in law is a psychiatric nurse on our local hospital’s “crisis team”: She’s one of the ones they send in when the cops stick their hands up and say “we’ve got a nut job here and we don’t know how to handle them”. In NZ the cops are lucky enough to ha ve that as an available option (though they’re still carrying a bunch of the other boulders in that cartoon) , but my main point is that it’s taken her 1 0 years of fulltime work as a psych nurse to have the skills to get on the crisis team. There’s no way a cop can ever acquire those skills , on top of the thousand other things they’re supposed to be expert in. This sort of shit is what happens when we expect them to.

The way I’ve had it explained to me is this:
You “defund” the police by slashing their budgets and using those freed up funds for the things cops are often called on to do but aren’t qualified to do.
Cops don’t handle mental illness, homelessness, healthcare, social work etc well but there’s very little funding towards those sorts of programs for the poor. And because those services are so bad people will call on 911 and have the cops come, which as we’re seeing here is a bad idea.
Technically, the true desire isn’t to work with the police, but to slash their funding (the defund aspect) and better allocate that money elsewhere. The theory being if the money that would otherwise be used to militarize a police force is allocated to social services, the police themselves would have an easier time policing.
I would agree that it probably needs better branding, though even with a happier-sounding branding I doubt we’d see much action. Departments don’t want to see their budgets slashed.

Friend’s dad retired as a cop not that long ago. Had been a beat cop the whole time, and had never unholstered his weapon outside the range. Those are the folks we need.
Much of the problem is that police have been radicalized into believing everyone is a threat, when it’s just not true. And some of them are just sadistic assholes.

Agree with what you’re saying and I definitely don’t think needing a happier, peppier tune is what’s necessarily required. This is a very serious problem that needs serious consideration.
But - when it’s simply presented as “defunding” we’re automatically, and firstly, talking about money - and people start thinking “wait, you want to pay the cops who protect us less, or give them less money for protection?” and you’re already having to explain yourself. Take the focus away from the funding, and the actual end result you’re trying to achieve, which is reallocating the work to specialists, and let cops specialize in what people commonly expect them to be focusing on - and give them more training in that set of tasks, we can probably get a whole lot more person joining the cause without giving evil people like Trump an opportunity to twist things around.

Yes like “demiti rarizing the police” doesn't sound anti police. It's about dividing responsibility so armed people trained to take control of situations aren't trying to console a mentally handicapped individual.

Absolutely agreed - probably a tougher task which will face a lot more opposition so for PR reasons I kind of get why folks might not want to start with that right off the bat.

It's not the budget that shot that kid. It was a militaristic attitude towards policing. Though dividing up specific areas of jurisdiction would require carving up that budget.

This hit’s close to home for me. I have a nephew with Asperger’s, who is 19 years old now. He had days similar to what has been described in this news story. My sister and BIL have been on a roller coaster with this one. He is high functioning but not capable of living on his own. I know he has been in some trouble, but living in a ver y small community, his autism is fairly well known. If he were in a larger metro area, I fear he would be facing a similar fate.

Most can’t afford the services it requires to properly “control” (you’re ignorant phrasing, not mine) a child with severe autism or other behavioral issues, and lobotomies (chemical or otherwise) aren’t a really good option. Not sure what country you live in if you think committing children to mental hospitals is still a thing.

I sat in jail a few months ago and one of the kids in there with me was clearly autistic. I have some experiencing working with kids on the spectrum, so I tried to help keep him calm (we were both in there for around twelve hours). This was in a large metro area in a jail with guards who have killed mentally handicapped people, so I really didn’t want to see him aggravate the guards, especially since his charges had been dismissed.
